When we got down here for the week, I was sure I was going to be looking to have salads and bowls and really simple meals all week. Somehow, we decided to venture up to Studio City for a meal and I am so glad we did.
We started the meal off with an order of their Barbecue Cauliflower. Cauliflower is all the rage these days and a lot of preparations tend to be sort of derivative. I couldn’t shake the sense that I’d tasted the barbecue sauce before, as though it came from a jar, but what I did like was the addition of pickles, pepitas and green onions that tied it all together and made it seem almost as though it were a deconstructed barbecue sandwich. Chopped pickles should probably make their way into more things.
Sweetie got the beautiful Rainbow Au Gratin King Oyster Mushrooms in Wine Sauce, an impressively beautiful plate of wedges of layers of thin potatoes, beets, carrots & house-made cheese sauce with huge trumpet mushrooms, Brussels sprouts, watermelon radishes and a rich red wine sauce. Those potatoes really were that bright red. I’ve never actually seen any like them before, though I have looked. This was a delicious and well-balanced plate of food.
From their Monthly Specials menu, I had the Pot Pie – a total comfort food plate of chickeny-seitan chunks, peas, carrots, mushrooms, corn, celery and onions. I didn’t mean it in a bad way, but it totally reminded me of the crappy Swanson’s Pot Pies I used to love as a kid. I doubt they used chicken. The sauce was tasty-creamy and had some umami that isn’t always present in strictly veggie sauces. I really enjoyed the crust. It was a great meal. If it weren’t up in Studio City, I think I could eat here every night.
The food was great and I loved being able to eat outdoors on their patio. Parking was a bit rough, which I didn’t expect considering where it was. Check it out if you’re in the area.
